Vampire bat control in the Americas; a review and proposed program for action.

چکیده
Vampire bats, which transmit paralytic rabies, pose a major obstacle to livestock raising in areas extending from Mexico to Argentina. More widespread use of available bat control measures could stop large-scale animal losses and should be continued. However, it is important that the innocuity and safety of recently developed anticoagulant techniques be amply demonstrated before the latter become widely used.

Vampire Bat Rabies: Ecology, Epidemiology and Control
Extensive surveillance in bat populations in response to recent emerging diseases has revealed that this group of mammals acts as a reservoir for a large range of viruses. However, the oldest known association between a zoonotic virus and a bat is that between rabies virus and the vampire bat. Vampire bats are only found in Latin America and their unique method of obtaining nutrition, blood-fee...

Bat rabies and its transmission to humans and other species in Mexico were investigated. Eighty-nine samples obtained from rabid livestock, cats, dogs, and humans in Mexico were studied by antigenic typing and partial sequence analysis. Samples were further compared with enzootic rabies associated with different species of bats in the Americas. Patterns of nucleotide variation allowed the defin...
متن کاملVampire Bat Rabies in the Americas
Vampire bats belong to the Desmodontidae family. Three species live in tropical and sub-tropical America. The most important one is Desmodus rotundus a medium size bat (Figure 1). These bats feed on blood of vertebrates and are very adapted to this diet. They take nearly 15ml of blood per meal. They live in colonies in humid caves or in splits of trees. In the colony, they show strong social li...
متن کاملDiphacinone residue from whole bodies of vampire bats: a laboratory study.
One way of exterminating the vampire bat, a leading destroyer of livestock in the Americas, is to catch some vampires, smear their backs with difihacinone, an anticoagulant, and release them to contaminate other bats in their roosts. This article describes tests designed to determine whether diphacinone residues in the bodies of vampires killed this way could pose a threat to nontarget species.
